Intervention: Roma

Rome, IT

Piazza D'Aracoeli is a small median-esque park nestled in between the Vittorio Emanuele II and Capitoline Hill monuments within the historic downtown of Rome. The location is currently only used as a bus stop amid one of the busiest streets in the district. There is much foot traffic in between the two monuments, but only a small sidewalk to traverse except for those brave enough to cross the street twice in order to utilize the park. To mitigate this, the traffic flow was pushed over to the far side of the monuments, cutting back some of the park on that side to allow two-way traffic. The other side was then expanded to allow a much safer walkway for the pedestrians. Using the Capitoline as a proportional precedent, many of the constructed elements in this new park were created using the Grasshopper software within Rhino, as a way to tie in modern procedures with historical ties. As an example, the fountain within the grotto started as a Palazzo bay, which got revolved on the x axis to become a circle, which itself was revolved into a sphere, and then split to create the bowl.
