Coda Ballet School

Chicago, IL

An infill site on Illinois St, nestled 3 blocks north of the Trump Tower in Chicago, this project was designed with the intention of engaging the urban context by pushing as much of the activity going on within the school to the street edge as possible. This was done by placing the practice spaces for the dancers against the sidewalk, advertising the school to those passing by. The edges themselves vary as a way to bring in a diverse array of light into the spaces throughout the day. Within the core of the building itself, numerous lounge spaces organized around an atrium allow for cross-level social activity whenever class is not in session, as well as providing additional diffuse light from the skylight above filtering down to the ground floor.
